Art Benefits All Coalition Alternative (ABACA), Inc., was founded in 1992 through an innovative partnership among five arts organizations(Artist Space, Art in General, The Drawing Center, Franklin Furnace, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council) and Satellite Academy/Forsyth Campus(SA/F), an alternative public high school serving students throughout New York City. Satellite joined forces with these organizations, all in close proximity, to form ABACA to provide a range of culturally diverse arts education experiences for youth who have had little experience with galleries, alternative spaces and museums. The current partners(Artist Space, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Satellite Academy) Continue to support ABACA's mission to enhance student's achievement, broaden student's horizons and build self-esteem through experiences of success in the arts.
Satellite Academy, Forsyth Street, is an alternative high school founded in 1979.
It is a school founded with the intention of catching young people who have fallen through the cracks at other schools, have chosen to leave or have been asked to leave other educational settings for any number of reasons. We are a vital and diverse community of learners devoted to transforming young minds and lives through education. We believe in the power of knowledge, of words, of arts, of relationships and of the power of non-violence. We nurture self-determination, hope and confidence. Our 200 students enroll on classes that are designed to re-awaken their love of learning and to foster a sense of community. Our curriculum encourages students to make connections between what they encounter in their academic pursuits and what they experience in the world. At Satellite Academy, education is liberation.
apexart was founded in 1994, by artist Steven Rand, apexart is a 501(c)(3) not for profit contemporary visual arts organization based in New York City with an exhibition space, an international residency, various ongoing public programs, and a conference series.
